Try Issue 83! Available in Bonfire or Caramel Apple Scent

jdp-cover-oct-2016We are seven today, but we must be precocious, based on the frequency with which people inquire, “What are you, twelve?”

And even though it’s our birthday, we have presents for you: a supernatural fishy tale, an absolutely true Hollywood story, a surreal case of sartorial revenge, and―because we love you―a hilarious attempt at canine exorcism. Plus, this month’s cover art punches tired gender norms in the spleen.

So happy birthday to us. And for the record, while we do not live in a zoo, we welcome comparisons to a monkey on both the visual and olfactory levels.

There are other worlds than these . . .

JDP June 2016 coverYou know how sometimes you get up for a glass of water in the middle of the night and catch a glimpse of yourself in the bathroom mirror in the dim blue glow of the nightlight and realize you are looking at an alternate universe where everything is almost, but not quite, the same as it is in our world?

Our June issue has a lot of that feeling. There are three stories about ordinary people―a woman who never cries, a television enthusiast, and an insurance claims adjuster―who have extraordinary experiences, and one poem about an extraordinary person who works in that most ordinary of places, a department store. And our sweet-creepy (sweepy?) cover art nails that surreal feeling perfectly.

So here it is, the September 2013 Issue, my penultimate as editor.

Which is interesting, because if there’s a theme to this month’s issue it is decidedly not “next to last,” but rather “firsts.”

First time having sex with General Lee? We’ve got that.

First time stealing a statue of Jesus that actually isn’t Jesus? Yes, yes, we have that too.

First time walking around your new sandcastle? Uh-huh.

First time hitch-hiking? You betcha’.

And first time trying to have your first time at Disneyland…of course, we’ve got that. Who else would?

(Also, because we’re JDP and are statutorily required to print a certain number of stories about the apocalypse, we also have a lovely piece of flash about the world ending, which admittedly bucks the whole “firsts” theme.)

And there you have it. Issue 46 is simultaneously a collection of firsts and my penultimate. Enjoy.
